Aoraki Secondary Schools Senior Qualifying Tennis Tournament
The Aoraki Secondary Schools Senior Qualifying Tennis Tournament was played at the South Canterbury Tennis Centre on Wednesday 17 February. Roncalli was represented with two teams.
Girls - Sophie Wilson, Ashleigh Gilchrist, Emily Gilchrist, Teisha Holden and Renee Pateman;
Boys - Damian Tarrant, Kaleb Pateman, Tom Kerr, Cameron Miller;
The girls grade consisted of six teams, all games were played one set to six. Roncalli faced Craighead in round one and won 5-1 only dropping one singles match. Year 9 student Sophie Wilson played well as number one being the youngest member of the team, this was a great start to her first Aoraki Secondary School event representing Roncalli College.
Ashburton College was too strong in round two winning 5-1 with Emily and Teisha the only combination to win their match. Round three saw Roncalli convincing winners over Geraldine High School 6-0. The last round of the day against Waitaki Girls High School was tough, Waitaki were the eventual overall winners of the girls grade. Ashleigh Gilchrist was the only player to win her singles match which was won in a tie-breaker. The girls team finished 3rd which was a great effort considering 3 of the 5 players were only juniors competing at a Senior Qualifying event.
The boy’s grade also had 6 teams competing for the Aoraki title, Roncalli won two and lost two. Rounds one and four were against tough opposition from Ashburton College and Timaru Boys High School 2 going down convincingly 6-0 in both matches. 4-2 wins over Geraldine High School and Mt Hutt College meant the boys finished 4th overall. Damian Tarrant won both his singles ties and Tom Kerr was lucky enough to win in a tie breaker in his singles match against Mt Hutt. Both doubles combinations picked up easy wins.
Many thanks to the parents who came along to watch throughout the day and provided on-going support, the students represented themselves proudly which made for a great day of tennis.
