Aoraki Secondary Schools Table Tennis Championships 2014
The Aoraki Secondary Schools table tennis Championships was held on Monday 28 July in Oamaru.  Entry numbers were up on previous years with 21 teams in total from six Aoraki Schools, Roncalli was represented with 5 teams.  The girl’s competition was played at Waitaki Girls High School and the boys at the Oamaru Club.  Roncalli girls team consisted of Ariella Ong, Anne Newmarch and Olivia Gourdie.  All three girls play regular Monday night table tennis and Ariella is a South Canterbury under 18 representative player.  The team did exceptionally well in their pool play winning four games from five, with these results they finished 2nd in pool A therefore played 2nd in pool B for 3rd and 4th place. They went onto beat MVHS 3-2 in a close match and finished 3rd overall.  Teams from Waitaki Girls High School played off for 1st and 2nd.  In the boys competition four Roncalli teams played against some tough opponents from Waitaki Boys HS and Timaru Boys.  The year 9 team of Jamie Sisson and Daniel Fitzgerald won 3 from 4 games and finished 2nd in pool B, both these boys are under 15 South Canterbury representatives.  The senior team of James Brosnahan and Tom Anderson playing in pool A also only lost one match.  This meant the two teams faced each other to determine 3rd and 4th place.  The juniors dominated taking the match 3-0.  The other two teams who competed were Patrick Brosnahan and Joe Anderson, Reilly Cormack and Tayla Meager, finishing 5th and 4th respectively in their pools.  It was great to see an increase in students involved in table tennis.
