Aoraki Secondary Schools Squash - 15 April 2014The Aoraki Secondary Schools Squash Championships was held on Tuesday at the Timaru Squash Club. Shannon Wallace, Amelia Race and Beth Lambourne represented the College in the girls grade. They won their first two rounds convincingly against Craighead 2 and Geraldine HS. After a very close encounter against Opihi in round 3, Opihi were lucky to win 2-1 after some great rallies were contested. In the 4th round the girls lost to Waitaki 1 3-0 who were eventual winners over Ashburton in the final. The Roncalli team played off for 5th/6th place against Waitaki GHS 2 and came out winners 3-0 to finish 5th out of the 10 teams. Thank you to Bernadette Wallace for helping out during the day.

Squash - learn to play
Students interested in learning to play Squash. The Timaru Squash Rackets Club (Brunswick Street) are hosting Junior Club Nights on Mondays 4.30pm – 5.30pm. This junior programme is for students aged between 10-18 years and will include basic techniques and rules and modified fun games and competitions. More information on term dates and cost is available from the Sports Office.
Aoraki Squash Championships
The Aoraki Secondary Schools Squash Champs was held at the Timaru Squash Racquets Club on Tuesday 14th May. Roncalli had two teams represented at this event. The boys draw had eight teams competing, and the girls seven teams. All matches were played best of three games up to 15.
Boys team - Henry Race, Harrison Sayer and Patrick Simpson
Girls team – Jaimi-Lee Kiernan, Amelia Race and Shannon Wallace
The boys team played a strong TBHS team in the first round with Roncalli going down 0-3. The next match of the day they faced Mt Hutt College the boys stepped up to the challenge and all three won their matches convincingly. This win put the team through to the plate final against Geraldine High School. Geraldine proved too good winning 3-0. The boys finished 6th overall.
The girls competition was split into two pools, with Roncalli seeded into pool A. The team faced Waitaki Girls High School Red in round one. Amelia playing at number two won both her 2nd and 3rd sets taking the win over her opponent 2-1. Shannon and Jaimi-Lee both lost their matches. Game 2 against Geraldine 1 Roncalli played well with Shannon coming back from one game down to win the 2nd and dominated the 3rd 15-3, Shannon got better and better playing outstanding shots. Amelia won her match easily 2-0 after putting some strong serves past her opponent, Jaimi-Lee went down 0-2. This team win 2-1 placed them 2nd in pool A which had them play 2nd placed Geraldine 2 from pool B to determine 3rd and 4th place. Both Amelia and Shannon won their matches convincingly which guaranteed 3rd place overall before number one Jaimi-Lee took to the court. Amelia got through the day unbeaten which was a great effort against senior players and her consistent performance throughout the day was good enough to be rewarded with most valuable player in the girls grade.
