Teacher in Charge/Coach: Guy Sutherland

Congratulations to the Rock Climbing team who finished a well deserved second place in the mixed team category at the Canterbury Climbing Competition on June 27th held at the Christchurch YMCA Climbing Wall

canty_climbing_2010_2.JPGThe Roncalli College Rock Climbing group meet each Monday after school from 3:30pm - 5:30pm to train on the climbing wall in the College gym. The group has up to 15 members, and the Teacher in Charge, Guy Sutherland, does a great job keeping things organized and overseeing the group. The group often go to outdoor climbing sites around Timaru to test their skills and try something new.
The group usually enter the 2 climbing competitions in Christchurch each year, they are the Canterbury Climbing Competition, a one day competition featuring teams from around Canterbury, and the South Island Secondary Schools Climbing Competition, held over 2 days and featuring teams from schools all over the South Island. Both competitions are held in Christchurch at the YMCA climbing centre.
The College usually enters 2 teams, in either the boys, girls, or mixed categories. A team is made up of 4 members, and they take turns climbing 3 walls in a section with another team belaying them, and points are awarded depending on how high the climber gets.

Roncalli is the only school in Timaru with our own climbing wall, and the group is always open to new members to make the most of the great facility, so if you are interested in joining the group, feel free to talk to Mr Sutherland.
