Roncalli and Ashburton Teams Dominate at Junior Tournament
The Roncalli College Senior A netball team held their annual fundraiser of the season on Sunday hosting the Aoraki Junior Year 9 & 10 Netball Development Tournament at the South Canterbury Netball Courts.
Twenty seven teams competed over four grades, 10A, 10B, 9A & 9B. Teams use this tournament as a build-up for the Junior South Island Secondary Schools Tournament to be held in Christchurch mid July.
The 10A grade proved strong with ten teams contesting the title, both Roncalli 10A and Craighead 10A teams went through their sections unbeaten and won their crossover semi-final matches. The final was a hard fought battle between two very strong teams, Roncalli were up 10-4 at half time, Craighead slowly clawed back to even the score at 14 all before Roncalli pulled away and held onto a two goal lead to win 17-15 at the final whistle. Ashburton finished in 3rd place after beating Waitaki Girls 15-7.
The 9A grade had nine teams play over two sections, Craighead beat Timaru Girls High in their semi-final to progress to the final and Ashburton College were convincing winners over Mt Hutt College. Craighead 9A faced a tough Ashburton College side in the final, Ashburton were too strong winning 19-9. Mt Hutt beat TGHS 13-11 to finish in 3rd place.
Ashburton, Craighead, Roncalli and Timaru Girls High School all entered teams in both the 9B and 10B grades and played a round robin competition. Ashburton College won both grades with Roncalli runners-up, Craighead third and TGHS 4th.
